Cities
Lochem:
The fortified town of Lochem is worth a visit including the Gudula church and tower.
During the Spanish rule, hay pickers did an unusual job of keeping the Spaniards out of town by picking hay from hay wagons that wanted to enter the town. However, the Spaniards had soldiers hidden in the hay wagon and were thus discovered and Lochem was saved from Spanish occupation. https://www.hglochem.nl/nl/node/483
Hanseatic city of Zutphen:
Zutphen is also called Tower City because of its large, historic buildings that form the citys skyline. With several museums, courtyards and other sights, you can almost imagine yourself in the Middle Ages here.
Zutphen grew around 1000 years ago around a stone burial court and a small church, at the confluence of the IJssel and Berkel rivers. From this, Zutphen owes its name, because the spot on two easily navigable rivers on a hill between swampy moors was called Zuidvenne, meaning Zutphen. Traces and contours have been found during excavations that indicate that the citys history is much older than previously assumed, such as a burial field that can be dated to around 700 AD. The inner city is a pleasant place to hang out and within cycling distance from Buitengewoon Laren.
Hanseatic city of Deventer:
Deventers rich history
The city of Deventer can be proud of a rich and ancient past, a past that saw many high points in terms of war and peace, trade and industry, art and culture. In the eighth century, people were already living where Deventer is today. Hunters, fishermen, farmers and cattle breeders settled on the river dunes along the IJssel. Later, the Bergkwartier and the Noordenbergkwartier grew up there, neighbourhoods that are among the oldest in the city.
The city of Lebuïnus
The actual founder of the city can be considered the English evangelist Lebuïnus. He crossed the river IJssel near what is now called Wilp in the Year 768 and built a small wooden church on one of the river dunes. The Great or Lebuïnus Church, the largest monument in Overijssel, bears the name of the later canonised Lebuïnus. The Brink is the central square with many shops, cafés and eateries. The square is also home to the famous Bussink Koek and Talamini ice cream. A historic city.
